Thank you to everyone who has joined PowerSellersUnite (PSU)
PSU was “born” when eBay implemented rate increases that significantly impacted sellers large & small. The fee hikes affect buyers also, as most sellers have no choice but to pass on the eBay fees to buyers. Our focus has now shifted away from the eBay boycott in early 2005 to helping sellers, and buyers, find the best alternative auction site(s) for their needs.

PSU is a fast- growing group of online members – seasoned and new – with common goals. We enjoy a fun, fast-paced environment where all facets of e-Commerce are discussed and debated.
PSU offers site navigation tools, free auction tools, and multiple search options right from the home page!

Our discussions include web site design to best alternative auction sites. If your area of question/interest is not found, ask and you will receive!

Take a minute and join one of the fastest growing online e-Commerce communities!

If you have any news, information, or updates you want to share please contact us

Will Cyber Monday be D-Day for Ebay?

The Monday following Thanksgiving is an important day for e-tailers. Known as Cyber Monday, it's the bellweather for holiday sales, much as "Black Friday" is for brick and mortar stores.

The last time the stock market bubble burst, back in 2000, Ebay held up very well. This time they did not escape the sell-off. Over the past 12 months the stock has gone from a high of around $35 to under $15. The data doesn't look good. According to TheStreet.com, although internet search usage was up in October over 2007, online sales for the first three weeks of November actually declined compared to last year.

There is some room for optimism at the 'Bay though. They do not have any significant exposure to the financial market meltdown, and their payment processing business alone could spark a boost in the stock price if a recovery, or at least stabilization, takes hold anytime soon. In addition, just as WalMart is expected to be perhaps the only major brick and mortar retailer to experience a sales increase this year, due to more discount shopping, Ebay may benefit from people looking for bargains online.

The early returns on Black Friday and Cyber Monday will certainly move the markets one way or another. Up to now traders have been relying on estimates and expert opinion as to how consumer spending is going to go in the fourth quarter. We all know how well those expert estimates prepared everyone ...

eBay's Donahoe Has Crow For Thanksgiving

by: Dinah Balk

Most eBay sellers enjoyed a nice turkey dinner yesterday with all the trimmings but I suspect John Donahoe, eBay (EBAY) CEO found a generous portion of crow sitting in the middle of his plate because Nielson's numbers are in and confirm buyers, sellers, and shareholders worst fears – John's disruptive innovations backfired!

The numbers tell the story. 1) Nielson reported a steady decline in eBay traffic all year but in October traffic dropped by slightly more than one third over last year; 2) Medved charts indicate sell thru rates at the lowest point I've seen in years; and 3) eBay stock is making new 52 week lows – none of which occurred prior to John's disruptive innovations that began earlier this year.

Dinah's top 10 list of what's wrong at eBay.

1. Management. Sellers set up an online petition to remove John as CEO which is unprecedented but not unexpected given the results of John's disruptive innovations.
2. Home page. It appears to have been designed by a tech student due to content and unnecessary bells & whistles that cause the page to load as slow as molasses.
3. Search. Best Match is designed to think for buyers but it seems to have an IQ of less than 50 judging by its performance. Most sellers have reported a 50%+ drop in sales.
4. Paypal. This has created a buyer vs. seller situation. Sellers refuse to ship before they are paid (can you blame them?) and Paypal is now judge & jury of all SNAD claims.
5. Advertising. eBay has increased advertising that sends buyers off the site. No wonder traffic & page views are down – even Amazon is advertising on eBay.
6. Shipping. eBay capped shipping rates below actual costs for media sellers.
7. Glitches. These occur on nearly a daily...

EBay quietly launches service for pro-sellers

On Monday, eBay quietly began offering a service to help large merchants sell thousands of fixed-price products via eBay.

The new program, Large Merchant Services, is still in beta, according to eBay. It "provides an efficient way to process large numbers of transactions within the eBay Trading Platform." It also offers inventory management based on SKU numbers.

EBay's service competes with Amazon's professional merchant services.

EBay already sells branded fixed-price goods on eBay.com and on shopping.com. But this new service expands upon a concept started when eBay launched the now defunct eBay Express.

"EBay is acknowledging the strength of Amazon's model and clearly they're making changes to target the same enterprise branded-seller market upon which Amazon has built their third-party seller program," said Eric Best, CEO of Mercent, a Seattle-based company that helps retailers take advantage of eBay's new service.

Online Shopping to Plateau As Slump Hits Cyberspace

Nobody was expecting online shopping to be immune from the economic downturn, but most forecasts had been calling for at least a smidgen of growth. Now, even that hope is damped.

For the first 23 days of November, online sales declined 4% to $8.2 billion from $8.5 billion the same time last year, according to market-research firm comScore Inc. The firm projects that retail spending online in the months of November and December will total $29.2 billion, flat from the same period last year -- a dreary sign for online retailers, many of which had grown accustomed to double-digit gains.

The figures follow numbers from October, when online sales rose only 1% compared with a year earlier.

"The decline that we're seeing is unprecedented," said Andrew Lipsman, a senior manager at comScore.

ComScore attributed the sales slowdown to factors including the volatile stock market and weak job market.

Holding out hope, Mr. Lipsman said that last year comScore saw consumers wait until later in the season to begin their holiday shopping online, in the hope of scoring better offers and deals. That could be a saving grace if the same thing happens this year.

"I think we can expect their spending will pick up as we get later into the season. That said, to expect there is going to be strong growth or even very positive growth at this moment in time seems optimistic," Mr. Lipsma ...

EBAY 12.80, +0.79, +6.6%) today announced a new way for members to add even more security to their PayPal accounts using their mobile phones. Customers can now choose to receive a unique six-digit security code via text message to their mobile phones prior to logging in to their accounts.
The PayPal SMS Security Key adds another layer of protection to PayPal accounts and uses the same security infrastructure as the PayPal Security Key, which generates a unique security code approximately every 30 seconds on a small electronic token. Members receive this code to their phones or tokens, and use the codes along with their usernames and passwords to sign in to their accounts.
This type of additional security, known as two-factor authentication, is used by leading financial institutions as an additional means to protect consumers and reduce losses from online fraud such as phishing attacks.

Start it low and let it go. As an auctioneer those words are more than just a short rhyme, they're words I live by.

Often, when I explain that very low starting bids and no reserves are critical elements of a great auction, people eyes often widen and they say I could never sell my items that cheap.

I go on to tell them, I could not afford to sell my items that cheaply as well, but beginning the auction of each item at a low start, with no reserve, is the surest way to get competitive bidding from an excited pool of buyers.

This means, that if you've stuck to the basics, and have a good item, it will bring fair market value at least at auction. Some people get it right away, and some just look at me in disbelief and say, I could never sell my items that cheap.
